Air Quality Forecasts


FORAIR-IT modeling system provides on daily basis forecast up to 3 days for the main atmospheric pollutants. The system is operated on two-way nested European and Italian domains at 20 and 4 km horizontal resolution, respectively. The modeling chain retrieves the Global Forecasting Systyem (GFS) meteorological fields from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), used to feed WRF (Version 4.1.2, Skamarock et al., 2019) prognostic meteorological model. SURFPRO module (Finardi et al., 2005) computes the turbulent parameters together with the natural emissions, starting from the WRF model outputs. Chemical boundary conditions are retrieved from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS, ). The anthropogenic emissions are provided by ISPRA (National Emission Inventory (year 2019)) for the Italian domain and by CAMS (global and regional emissions, April 2019 version) for the European domain. The processor EMMA (Arianet, 2006) is used to disaggregate in time and space the anthropogenic emissions for all the pollutants suitable to the chemical transport model FARM (Silibello et al. 2008), which estimates the concentrations using SAPRC-99 gas-phase scheme coupled with aero3 module. The thermodynamic equilibrium between gas and aerosol phases of condensable inorganic and organic species are based on ISORROPIA model (Fountoukis et al., 2007; Nenes et al.,1998) and SORGAM model (Shell et al. 2001), respectively.
