Title: Compton Back-Scattering X-Ray Sources.

Abstract: Along with the development of FEL X-ray sources, the design and the construction of Compton Back-Scattering (CBS) based devices for different applications, are being pursued. These sources are designed to provide monochromatic, high peak brightness tunable light beams, with photon energies above 10 KeV. The source brightness is the most significant figure of merit, which specifies the limits of their use within a specific field of application. It is a quality factor reflecting the quality of the electron beam itself, which in turn depends on the charge, emittance, energy spread… In this seminar, we discuss the theoretical background of electron scattering in an intense laser field, which, since the early sixties of the last century has opened a new perspective in QED. We also present a design strategy for CBS X-ray sources. The point of view we develop is closely similar to that developed for FEL and is indeed based on simple scaling relations accounting for the entanglement between the different physical quantities contributing to the output ray beam performances. We briefly mention the relevance of these studies to non-linear QED and to Astrophysics. We discuss specific applications of these sources, which unlike the X-Ray sources are at the level of small-scale laboratories.
