R&D in Control Systems and Data handling in large scientific
experiments for nuclear fusion research. Software development in real-time acquisition systems and networked
control systems on embedded controllers and open source
real-time operating systems (CompactPCI/PXI, VME, Linux/RTAI/RTNET). System administrator of large size High Performance Computing
facilities. clusters of multi-core computing nodes with low latency and high
bandwidth interconnection networks (Infiniband, OmniPath), Resources Management
Systems (LSF, SLURM,PBS), high performance parallel
and wide area distributed file systems (GPFS, Lustre, AFS) as well as storage
systems in Storage Area Network in fiber channel switched topologies Design and development of application program interfaces for DBMS and
Integrating Tokamak Modelling Task Force data structure based on consistent
physical objects. Software development of parallel applications in Message Passing Interface
(MPI) and OpenMP. Software development in Heterogeneous architectures GPU/FPGA with
Xilinx/Vitis and Intel OneAPI. Design and development of cloud platforms for storage and sharing
large datasets for deploying E3S (ENEA-Staging/Storage/Sharing): the
enterprise cloud platform of ENEA data repositories. C/C++, Java, PHP, Python, IDL, Matlab, Perl, XML Power user of MacOSX, Linux, Windows Mysql, MongoDB, Objectivity, MDSplus, ROOT, Hadoop, HDF5, NetCDF,
ITM-TF Universl Access Layer. Co-author of ~70 papers on peer review journals and ~30 as author and
several communications to conferences. The research and management activities
including: High Performance Computing: Design, implementation and management of
HPC facility available to European nuclear fusion scientist community to
develop and store experimental/simulation data. Installation and
configuration of cluster of computing nodes with Infiniband and OmniPath
interconnection. Test of performances on parallel file system Lustre
developing I/O benchmarks based on MPI and ITM-TF Universal Access Layer
(UAL). Commissioning and test benchmark of HPC for Fusion as member of board
and operative in the Ad Hoc Group for commissioning of HPC-FF. Computing Molecular Dynamic in drug design using the open source code Gromacs in GPU clusters. Staging, Storage & Sharing architectures for data handling in a
multisite scientific organization using cloud synch and sharing technologies. High Performance Computing: co-author of the ENEA-CINECA proposal to
tenders provisioning of a peta-scale HPC facility for EuroFusion (awarded in
2015 and 2018). Data handling: ITC design and implementation of the infrastructures to
store/retrieval/analysis of the FTU data. Remote FTU data access using MDS++
and Wide Area Distributed File System (OpenAFS). Development of FTU data
warehouse based on Mysql and ROOT as data extraction tools. Installation and
configuration of data storage systems in Storage Area Network on Fibre
Channel. Real Time Control: MHD real-time control of plasma instabilities of
FTU using ECRH. The system developed is able to
identify, in real-time, mode presence/location and the position of ECRH
absorption, and to proceed to suppress the mode. An open
source solution to simulate synchronous database network
functionalities was tested based on RTnet/Linux RTAI. Data acquisition and networked control systems: the FTU systems are
being developed frequently to keep into account the obsolesce of CAMAC
hardware and PLC old technologies by replacing with CompactPXI and Siemens S7
PLC. Instrumentation & Control Preliminary Design of Water Detritiation
System of ITER: functional analysis, P&ID, control algorithms and
architectures, I&C design and configurations for Safety, Interlocks and
Process controls based on PLC S7 Siemens and HIMA Planar for Safety Integrity
Level in IEC 61508. Referee of The Journals: Fusion
Engineering and Design (Elsevier), IEEE Transaction on Nuclear Science RUP (Responsabile Unico di Procedimento) since 2018
